An 89-year-old unvaccinated woman with pre-existing comorbidities passed away from COVID-19 earlier this week.

The Health Ministry says she was brought to the Valelevu Health Centre in distress and sadly passed away a few hours.

Fiji has recorded 158 new cases of COVID-19 of which 62 new cases were recorded on Tuesday, 60 new cases were recorded on Wednesday and 36 new cases in the last 24 hours ending at 8am yesterday.

67 cases were recorded in the Central Division; 53 cases were recorded in the Western Division; 21 cases were recorded in the Northern Division and 17 cases were recorded in the Eastern Division.

Permanent Secretary for Health Dr James Fong says they are receiving reports of an increase in cases reported from workplaces.

Dr Fong says anyone who is sick should not be attending work or school and if you have COVID-19 symptoms you must get tested for COVID-19.

He adds if you test positive, isolation is mandatory for 7 days.

Dr Fong further says all the hospitals have been notified to reintroduce more stringent COVID safe measures which includes restricting visitors, more strict enforcement of masking and hand sanitization practices and to strengthen screening protocols.

There are currently 212 active COVID cases in Fiji.
