The Chief Executive Officer of the Nausori and Nasinu Town Councils Anurashika Bari says there was one action missed by their team in the setting up of the Caubati Resource Recovery Facility while the Department of Environment confirms the facility will not go under operation until all pre-operational requirements are met.

Bari highlighted the oversight when questioned by Fijivillage if the approval was given from the Department of Environment for the location and setting up of the facility.

She says they are working with the Department of Environment to fix this issue but cannot reveal what had happened.

Bari says this is a pilot project and this was one of the challenges they had faced.

Bari says the two facilities in Caubati and Makoi will fix the issue of waste for the Nasinu Town Council.

She says for Nasinu itself, the Council collects 20,000 tonnes of waste in a year and this costs approximately $2.5 million.

Bari says this is 80%  of the council revenue and this needs to change.

Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary for Environment, Joshua Wycliffe says they are working with the Ministry of Local Government and assisting them with their pre-operational requirements.

He says the Department of Environment has required that the facility not go under operation until all pre-operational requirements are met.
