Speeding is still a risk, yet many take chances – LTA CEO

2 lives lost over the weekend

It was a tragic weekend where two people lost their lives, and we want to change people’s mindset because speeding significantly increases the risk of a crash, yet far too many continue to take dangerous risks.

Land Transport Authority CEO, Irimaia Rokosawa highlighted this following the fatal accidents over the weekend and emphasised the importance of adhering to speed limits, maintaining proper control of vehicles and staying alert at all times.

Rokosawa says these are basic safety practices and often the only difference between a life and death situation on the roads.

The CEO says despite numerous warnings and advisories, many drivers are still ignoring the risks associated with reckless driving, speeding and improper overtaking.

Rokosawa adds that this negligence is costing lives.

He says adverse weather also significantly impacts driving conditions, particularly during rain and strong winds with reduced visibility and slippery surfaces, which increase the risk of accidents, as drivers may misjudge distances and underestimate the severity of road conditions.

Rokosawa says the authority’s broader road safety campaign aims to create a culture where responsible driving becomes the norm through consistent enforcement, public education, and strategic partnerships with law enforcement agencies.

The CEO adds that they, together with the Fiji Police, will continue their enforcement efforts and visibility to protect lives and build a safer road environment for all.
