As Hindus begin the nine days of Navratri, the worship of Goddess Durga in her nine forms, the Shree Sanatan Dharam Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji is calling on people to remember that women deserve respect not just during these nine days, but every day.

Sabha National President Dhirendra Nand says Navratri is a time of devotion where the nine forms of Goddessa Durga are worshipped, with prayers, fasting, kirtans, offerings and cultural activities such as dandiya taking place in temples and homes.

Its primary significance is honouring the victory of good over evil, symbolized by the goddess Durga's triumph over the demon Mahishasura.

Nand stresses that while the festival honours the Divine Mother, women in every home, as mothers, wives, daughters and sisters must also be given the same respect as a goddess.

The Sabha president says domestic violence remains a serious issue in society and is urging men to reject domestic violence.

He is also urging families to use Navratri as a time to strengthen their bonds, spend time together and move forward with respect, peace and love.

Meanwhile, for those who are not able to go to the temple, the Durga Katha will be broadcast on Radio Sargam for the next nine days starting today.

Navratri concludes on the 2nd of October while Dussehra is on the next day.
