Moreen Asheehy Ram is carrying on the legacy of her late father by continuing rice farming to assist her with educational expenses and putting meals on the table for her family.

Ram who is from Muanidevo in Dreketi, says she is a full time farmer and has been investing her time and energy in rice farming for several years.

The 35-year-old says she is indebted to her late father for teaching her the most basic tool for survival and she has utilised it to earn and provide for her family.

She says after preparing breakfast at 3am she is off to the rice farm where she spends the majority of her day tending the crops.

Ram says every season brings new challenges, but she has learned to adapt and use sustainable farming practices to ensure that the soil remains healthy and productive for years.

She says evenings are reserved for family time, where they gather to enjoy meals made from the rice they have cultivated as there’s nothing more fulfilling than sitting down together, knowing that they’ve grown their own food.

Ram acknowledged the Fiji Rice Limited for their continuous support towards rice farmers as rice prices increased from $800 per tonne to $1000 per tonne.
