Martial Arts Programme has been launched at the Fiji National University Nasinu campus which aims to foster a hoslistic approach to Martial Arts training, enabling participants to enhance their physical proficiency in a diverse range of Martial Arts disciplines.

FNU says by offering training in Hapkido, Hosinsul, Haidong Gumdo, Tae Kwon Do, Wuzhu Sanda Boxing, and Judo, this programme aims to foster a holistic approach to Martial Arts training, enabling participants to enhance their physical fitness, mental, spiritual, and self-defence capabilities.

Chief Guest and Professor in Teacher Education at the College of Humanities and Education, Professor Govinda Lingam, says Martial Arts has always been more than just a physical activity it is a journey of personal transformation.

Lingham says they are not just launching a programme, but they are opening the doors to new opportunities for self-discipline, physical fitness, mental resilience, and personal growth.

He says Martial Arts is for everyone regardless of your age, background, or physical ability.

He adds he is certain under the instructor Captain Korovou will ensure that a safe and supportive environment is provided, where each student can learn at their own pace, feel empowered, and be part of the Fiji National University that values mutual respect and growth.

Lingham stresses that Martial Arts is a way of life it teaches them how to remain calm in the face of adversity, how to overcome challenges with focus and determination, and how to build a mindset that values continuous self-improvement.

CHE Associate Dean Learning and Teacher, Dr Victor Alasa, says the initiative marked a significant milestone in the University’s commitment to providing a diverse range of educational opportunities that cater to the interests and aspirations of our students.

Doctor Alasa says this short course programme will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of various Martial Arts techniques and their experienced instructors will guide students through rigorous training, ensuring they develop the necessary skills and confidence.

CHE’s Head of Department, Secondary and Sports Education, Suraj Singh, says with society facing increasingly complex challenges, the values and skills imparted by martial arts are more relevant now.

Singh says Martial Arts is not only about attacking and defending but also changes how people think and it helps people learn how to handle difficult moments and keep their composure all the time.
