The spirit of Diwali is lighting up homes and hearts across Fiji as families begin the five-day Festival of Lights with Dhanteras, a day marked by prayers, shopping, and preparations for the joyous celebrations ahead.

On this day devotees pray to Lord Dhanvantari for good health and prosperity.

Diyas (lamps) will be lit in the evening for Yam Deep Daan to seek protection from untimely death.

Many are also observing Hanuman Utsav today, offering prayers to Lord Hanuman for strength and protection.

23-year-old Raina Nandani from Nausori shared her excitement with fijivillage News, saying Dhanteras is a special day that sets the tone for the entire Diwali celebration.

She says it is considered auspicious to buy gold, silver, and utensils on this day.

Nandani adds that Diwali is not just about lights and sweets; it’s about spreading joy, meeting people, and making new connections, and she is wishing everyone a very happy Diwali.

22-year-old twins Marylin Manvika and Melissa Manvi Goundar were doing some last minute Diwali shopping with their grandmother.

The Samabula residents shared that on Dhanteras, they honour Goddess Lakshmi.

Both sisters say their preparations are going well, and they are looking forward to celebrating the festival with their family.

Mohini Lata from Tacirua says that buying new utensils and brooms is believed to bring good luck and remove negativity from the home.

She is also reminding everyone to celebrate safely, especially when using diyas and firecrackers, and encouraged families to enjoy the time together.

As Dhanteras kicks off the Diwali festivities across Fiji, it’s clear the festival continues to shine as a symbol of unity, tradition, and hope for people of all backgrounds.

Roop Narak Chaturthi will be celebrated tomorrow.

Diwali will be celebrated on Tuesday while Govardhan Pooja and Bhai Duj are on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively.
