Moana Pasifika captain Ardie Savea is poised to miss Super Rugby Pacific in 2026 as he takes up a second sabbatical with the Kobe Steelers in Japan, with an announcement expected this week.
Savea had a sabbatical option in his contract with New Zealand Rugby when he re-signed though to the Rugby World Cup in 2027, and his desire to exercise it will come as no surprise.
Savea also spent the 2024 season with Kobe in Japan Rugby League One, and spoke fondly of the experience at the time.
Nevertheless, his exit will be a blow for Moana Pasifika, who were inspired by Savea’s feats this year.
31-year old Savea was the best player in Super Rugby Pacific and almost single handedly lifted Moana Pasifika to some famous wins, notably against the Blues at North Harbour Stadium in May.
Moana Pasifika finished seventh on the final ladder, five competition points behind the Blues, and the challenge for coach Tana Umaga and his staff will be to not go backwards without Savea, who will return for the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific campaign.
But Moana Pasifika have already signed former All Black Ngani Laumape to bolster their squad for next year, and the momentum they are building will make them a more attractive destination for top players.
