Police are investigating the death of a 29-year-old man and the hospitalisation of another following a kava session in Lakena, Nausori, on Saturday night.
A family member told fijivillage News the two men had been drinking grog and beer at a friend’s place in Lakena before returning home and going to sleep.
The family member says one of the men later started vomiting and was taken to the Nausori Health Centre.
According to the family member, medical staff found what appeared to be datura, also known as thornapple, seeds in his vomit.
Datura seeds are poisonous and contain psychoactive compounds.
The family member says Rajinish Lal, who was a nurse, later fainted and was pronounced dead yesterday morning.
His friend remains in critical condition and is reportedly unable to see.
Police say they are awaiting the post-mortem examination report.
