Police Commissioner, Sitiveni Qiliho directed immediate action to be taken by Police Officers to find a taxi driver this morning who was seen repeatedly punching a person sitting in the backseat of his taxi in the heart of Suva, while Qiliho is also looking at the alleged poor initial response by Police into this case.

The Commissioner directed the action after a concerned citizen travelling behind the taxi contacted Fijivillage after witnessing the repeated assault by the taxi driver while he was driving in peak traffic period at about 7.50am from Rodwell Road right through the capital city past Victoria Parade.

The driver allegedly beat up the person about 6 times.

The concerned citizen also told us that she first called the Totogo Police Station telephone number to alert Police while the incident was occurring however there was no response.

She also contacted the emergency number 917 and told Police about what they were witnessing however she alleges that she kept getting transferred from one phone extension to another.

They were transferred to a few extensions while the beatings continued and the car was moving at times.

Fijivillage immediately forwarded the video footage to the Police Commissioner.

Police confirm that the taxi driver was taken into custody and it is alleged that he was assaulting his de facto partner.

Police have also thanked the member of the public who provided the information and video footage.

They are also looking into the alleged poor initial response by Police, how the telephone calls were handled and confirm that this will result in disciplinary action.
