RKS and ACS lead medal tally after day one of 2018 Coca-Cola Games

Viliame Salusalu of Ratu Kadavulevu School wins the Senior Boys 1500m finals.

Ratu Kadavulevu School and Adi Cakobau School lead the Legend FM and FM96 Coca-Cola Games medal tally after day one of competition.

ACS is leading the girls' division with 3 gold and 1 silver,  Jasper Williams High School is in second place with 1 gold and 1 silver while Suva Grammar School is in third place with 1 gold.

RKS is leading the boys' division with 2 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze, Marist Brothers High School is second with 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze and QVS is third with 1 gold and 1 silver.

Niusawa Methodist and Xavier College are both in fourth place with a gold medal each.

Meanwhile, cousins Shane Tuvusa of Natabua High School and Malasebe Tuvusa of Suva Grammar School will go head to head in the Coca-Cola Games 100m Senior Boys final this afternoon.

Natabua’s Shane Tuvusa recorded the fastest time in the Senior Boys 100 metres heats with a time of 11.04 seconds. The next best time going into the final today was recorded by Tony Lemeki of Marist with a time of 11.05 seconds.  Jim Colasau of QVS and Alfred Turner of RKS have also qualified for the 100 metres finals today.

Banuve Tabakaucoro’s record which was set in 2011, stands at 10.43 seconds.

Natabua’s Shane Tuvusa says that it was not a good start for him in the heats but he still has a lot more to give and he is looking forward to the final today. 

Tuvusa says he is looking forward to having fun in the final.

Tuvusa will face tough competition from Tony Lemeki of Marist as he recorded the second fastest time in the heat.

Lemeki says he now knows where he needs to improve ahead of the final and he is ready to challenge Tuvusa.

In the Senior Girls 100 metres heats, Makereta Naulu of ACS is the favourite as she recorded the fastest time of 12.59 seconds. Jasper’s Atelaite Buna recorded the second fastest time in the heat with a time of 12.94 seconds.

Nemani Medreilagi of Natabua recorded the fastest time of 10.88 seconds in the Intermediate Boys 100 metres heats.

Suva Grammar School’s Kolinio Radrudru beat Joseva Tabakaucoro of Marist in their heat. Radrudru who has just returned from the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast clocked a time of 11.01 seconds. Tabakaucoro is also through to the final today after clocking a time of 11.08 seconds.

Tyrone Chambers of Natabua and James Cox of RKS have not qualified for the final today.

Heleina Young of Saint Joseph’s Secondary School is the favourite to win gold in the Intermediate Girls 100 metres after clocking the fastest time in the heats. Heleina’s time is 12.07 seconds. The next best times were recorded by Salote Baravilala and Jessie Vakaloloma. Their times are 12.53 and 12.64 seconds respectively.

The 100 metres finals will start at 5.40pm today.

In the 400 metres final:

Kameli Sauduadua of RKS will be one of the favourites for the Senior Boys title after he clocked the fastest time in the heats with 49.14 seconds. Dudley High School’s Melchizedek Katafono had the seconded fastest time with 49.72 seconds while Samuela Draunibaka of Holy Cross College recorded the third fastest time with 51.28 seconds.

In the Senior Girls, 400 metres final Elenani Tinai of ACS had a time of 59.58 seconds which is the fastest in the heats, Akanisi Sokoiwasa of Jasper Williams recorded the second fastest time with 59.95.

In the Intermediate Boys, Lepani Bativucu of Ratu Luke Memorial School will be one of the favourites for the title as he clocked the fastest time with 50.04 seconds. He will face competition from Joeli Ravulo of RKS who had a time of 50.91 seconds while Nikola Raiqeu of St John’s College had the third best time of 51.02 seconds.

The 400 metres finals will begin at 5 pm today.

36 gold medals will be up for grabs today.

In the 1,500 metres finals:

Camari Adilasaqa of Wainibuka Junior Secondary School won gold in the girls 1,500 metres while Melania Turaga of Jasper settled for silver and Lavenia Kororua got bronze.

John Raju of Xavier College won gold in the Sub Junior Boys 1,500 metres, Iowane Viani of Namosi Secondary School settled for silver while Mesulame Raivau of Nasasavia Secondary School got bronze.

Raju who is from Wailailai in Ba has dedicated the win to his younger brother who was born on Wednesday.

Naitasiri Secondary School’s Sulu-vulaono Ma’afu won gold in the Junior Boys 1,500 metres, Setareki Tukania of RKS settled for silver while Sefanaia Ducivaki of Natabua High School got bronze.

Ma’afu dedicated his win to his parents adding that they were his motivation to be part of the Coca-Cola Games this year.

In the Intermediate Boys 1,500 metres, Petero Veitaqomaki won the first gold for Marist Brothers High School, Dave Raika of RKS got silver while Tevita Vakasuka of RKS settled for bronze.
