In an effort to ensure that the needs of marginalised and vulnerable people are accommodated in the aftermath of a disaster, the staff of Empower Pacific is currently undergoing a two‑day Disaster Preparedness workshop this week.

Speaking to Fijivillage, Empower Pacific CEO Patrick Morgam says in the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Winston in 2016, Empower Pacific had identified an increase in gender based violence and child abuse cases during its emergency response efforts.

Morgam says the training covers topics such as Gender Equality and Social Inclusion, Child Protection and Analysis, which are essential skills to integrate into future disaster relief efforts.

He says they were also able to provide a helping hand during Tropical Cyclones Gita and Keni.

He says more than 30 of their staff from Suva, Labasa and Lautoka are participating in this two‑day Disaster Preparedness workshop.

Empower Pacific is one of the 11 Civil Society Organisation responders supported by the Australian Government to prepare for the next cyclone season.

The Australian government has provided Empower Pacific with a grant of $40,000 and is committed to supporting Fiji’s efforts to build resilience and mitigate risks in disaster response and preparedness.
