With the general elections expected to be held by February next year, the Constitution Review Commission Chairman, Sevuloni Valenitabua says if submissions and the outcome of the consultations demand that there be a change to the electoral system, then they may have to recommend the change to the system.
When asked by fijivillage News, Valenitabua says they know the complaints against the 2013 Constitution but they cannot decide on that, and will wait for the consultations.
When we further asked about the change in the electoral system for the general elections, and the municipal elections in September this year having the first past the post system which is different from the current system used for the general elections and whether another system will further confuse the voters, Valenitabua says they will look into these issues in detail, and that has to be decided later.
Review Commissioner, Doctor John Fatiaki says the electoral system for the country is incorporated as part of the 2013 Constitution so any review of the Constitution proper will also entail their looking at the electoral system.
He says they are open and will not make up their minds prior to the consultations.
Doctor Fatiaki says they want to hear what people think.
He says he has just heard that the municipal elections will be held under the first past the post system and he presumes everybody will be educated about that before that elections.
The Constitution Review Commission will submit its report by August before Cabinet assesses the report, and then it is expected to go to Parliament.
The earliest possible general elections date could be August 7th this year with the latest possible election day set for February 6th next year.
