The Fiji Airways Men’s National 7s side went down 21-14 to Australia in the first cup semifinal of the Valladolid 7s in Spain.
The Australians came into the match with a game plan, starving the Fijians with possession as they book their place in the final.
James Turner opened the scoring for Australia in the fifth minute of the first half to lead 7-0.
Fiji responded a minute later through Kavekini Tanivanuakula to level the points to 7-all at half time.
Australia came back firing in the second half with Henry Hutchison crossing over the try line twice as they continued to starve the Fijians possession.
George Bose scored for Fiji, but it wasn’t enough to give them the win.
Fiji will now play in the third-place playoff, where they will face Argentina at 1.16am tomorrow.
In the second semifinal, South Africa beat Argentina 14-7.
Looking at other matches, Great Britain will take on Uruguay at 9.53pm in the 11th place playoff, the USA will meet Germany at 10.37 in the 9th place playoff, France will face Kenya at 11.26pm in the 7th place playoff, Spain will meet New Zealand at 12.20am tomorrow in the 5th place playoff and Australia will face South Africa at 2.26am tomorrow in the cup final.
