Possesion and ball retention will be key against the Aussies in Spain

Ball possession and retention will be crucial for the Fiji Airways Men's National 7s team as they prepare to take on Australia in the semi-finals of the Valladolid 7s in Spain tonight.

Fiji heads into the clash with confidence after a dominant quarter-final victory over New Zealand.

The win marked Fiji's first major triumph over the Kiwis in a knockout match since 2013 in Dubai, when Ben Ryan coached the side, and current coaching duo Osea Kolinisau and Jerry Tuwai were part of the playing squad.

Now leading from the sidelines, Kolinisau and Tuwai have helped guide Fiji back into title contention.

The national side suffered just one defeat on their road to the semi-finals, falling to tournament hosts Spain in their final pool match.

Assistant coach Jerry Tuwai says his goal is to help restore Fiji to its former dominance in the sevens game and secure the championship title in his coaching role.

Fiji will face Australia in the first semi-final at 8:44pm, with a place in the Cup final on the line.

In the second semi-final, Argentina will take on South Africa at 9:06pm.

The Cup final is scheduled for 2:26am tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s team will meet Spain in the seventh-place playoff at 11:04pm.
