Taylor powers through injury to claim multiple gold medals at Swimming Championships
Battling minor injuries in the lead-up to competition, Swami Vivekananda College student, Reuben Taylor still managed to overcome the setbacks and deliver a strong performance at the National Schools Age Group Swimming Championships held at the National Aquatic Centre, finishing with multiple gold medals and a silver across individual and relay events.

The 17-year-old was among the standout performers at the championships, competing in the 50 metres freestyle, 100 metres freestyle, 200 metres freestyle, 100 metres butterfly, as well as the 200 metres medley relay and 4x100 metres freestyle relay events.

Taylor produced impressive results in the championships, claiming gold in the 50 metres freestyle, 100 metres freestyle, and 100 metres butterfly, while also adding a silver medal in the 200 metres freestyle.

He further contributed to his school’s success in the pool, helping secure two relay gold medals.

Despite missing out on personal bests in some events, Taylor says he was satisfied with his overall performance, particularly given the disruption to his preparation caused by minor leg injuries in the build-up to the meet.

He dedicated his achievements to his family, including his parents and siblings, as well as his coaches for their continued support throughout his swimming journey.

He credited a structured two-month training programme, balancing regular weekly sessions with school commitments, as key to staying prepared for competition.

He also reflected on the challenge of competing at higher-level meets like the 14th Oceania Swimming Championships that was recently held in Darwin,  Australia, saying the experience of racing against stronger opposition helped him better understand the demands of international competition.

He says it was very nerve-wracking, and there were a lot of faster swimmers compared to what they usually see in Fiji, but it was a really good experience.

Beyond his results, Taylor highlighted the value of team spirit and mentorship within the school squad, saying he enjoyed supporting younger swimmers and helping them develop their skills.

Taylor is also encouraging young athletes to remain disciplined and committed in their training, saying hard work remains the foundation of success in sport.
