Despite losing her mother during her studies and balancing family responsibilities at home, 24-year-old Shaleshni Devi has overcome the odds to become the only female graduate in her family.
Devi, who is from the Gold Town in Tavua, graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Relations, Human Resource Management, and Management during the Fiji National University graduation ceremony.
The 24-year-old says her journey was far from easy and filled with personal and emotional challenges.
She says she initially started a degree in Education in 2021, but had to stop after her mother became seriously ill and later passed away in 2022.
Devi says after going through that difficult period, she decided to continue pursuing her dreams and later enrolled in a Bachelor's degree in Commerce, specialising in Human Resource Management and Management.
She says being the only daughter and the only female graduate in her family makes the achievement even more special.
Devi says her father stood by her side throughout the journey and remained one of her biggest sources of support.
She also acknowledged her uncle for helping her through difficult times.
The graduate says balancing studies and family responsibilities was not easy as she had to prepare breakfast and lunch for her family before leaving home for classes.
She says that despite the obstacles, she remained determined to complete her studies.
Devi now hopes to continue her education and pursue postgraduate studies in Human Resources.
