Following consultations with key stakeholders and the Minister for Defence and Veterans Affairs, Minister Ioane Naivalurua has authorised the Commissioner of the Fiji Police Force to engage with the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and establish a Joint Task Force, supported by clear operational procedures to enhance coordination and effectiveness in responding to drug-related threats.
Naivalurua assured the public that all joint operations will be lawful and deliberate.
He says they will focus solely on protecting the safety, security, and wellbeing of the people of Fiji.
Naivalurua says claims by some commentators about ulterior motives are incorrect and unnecessarily alarmist, and risk distracting from the serious work required to address a real and present national challenge.
He also emphasised that tackling the drug problem extends beyond enforcement alone.
He adds it requires sustained internal and external engagement across border control, maritime patrols, intelligence gathering, surveillance, law enforcement, public awareness, treatment, rehabilitation, and community support.
Naivalurua also reaffirms that this is a complex challenge that demands cooperation, discipline, and resolve.
He adds no single institution can do this alone and by working together, he says, we can protect the safety, health, and future of our nation.
He adds that fighting drugs is no longer business as usual, we must intensify the fight.
