LTA urges road users to prioritise safety following fatal Vatukoula crash

The Land Transport Authority is urging drivers to prioritise road safety following the fatal accident in Vatukoula that claimed four lives yesterday morning.

According to preliminary information from Police, four people died and one person survived with injuries after a vehicle returning from a family function in Ba lost control, veered off the road and plunged into a river near Vatukoula.

LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa has expressed his condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones in the crash.

Rokosawa also extended his condolences to the families affected by the recent boat tragedy in Beqa waters, where three people lost their lives after a boat capsized.

He says all road users and vessel operators must take responsibility for their actions and make safety their highest priority.

Rokosawa says drivers should adjust their driving to suit road and weather conditions, while people should carefully plan their travel based on weather forecasts and advisories.

He says speeding, careless driving, fatigue and poor judgement continue to be major contributing factors in serious and fatal road accidents.

The CEO is also reminding drivers not to attempt crossing flooded roads and to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before travelling.

Rokosawa says passengers also have a responsibility to speak up if they feel unsafe in a vehicle, while pedestrians should remain alert, particularly during periods of heavy rain and poor visibility.

He is also calling on parents and guardians to closely supervise children near roads and is urging public transport operators to maintain high safety standards at all times.

Rokosawa says road safety is a shared responsibility that requires discipline, patience and constant awareness from everyone.
