2 oil wells potentially viable in Fiji

Minister for Finance Esrom Immanuel says the Government has four levels of intervention with respect to the fuel crisis and we are at the first level and have not moved into emergency levels.

While responding to a question on Government's readiness during the 2026-2027 National Budget Consultation at the Fiji National University Nasinu Campus, Immanuel says the Government has been aware of the fuel crisis for one month.

He says once emergency levels are reached, financial and policy initiatives will be introduced to cushion the impact on businesses, people and the economy.

Immanuel says the aim is to ensure that people continue to work, attend school and carry on with daily activities.

The Minister explains that within the framework, there is a committee consisting of Permanent Secretaries, Cabinet sub-committee, and at the top, a National Security Council which is chaired by the Prime Minister.

He confirms there have already been two meetings at the National Security Council level, with another scheduled for tomorrow.

Immanuel says these meetings will assess the situation further and discussions are being held at the Permanent Secretary level, and include fuel companies, FCCC and other key stakeholders.

He says as the situation evolves and a higher level of intervention is reached, appropriate policies will be integrated.

Meanwhile, the Government has announced that it is actively working on measures to help cushion the impact of the fuel price increase through targeted financial and policy responses aimed at supporting low-income households, assisting businesses facing rising operational costs, and maintaining stability in key sectors of the economy.

Further details on these mitigation measures will be announced soon.

The Government also encourages all Fijians to continue exercising responsible fuel use and to support efforts that improve efficiency and reduce unnecessary consumption where possible.

Meanwhile, Immanuel also confirmed that studies have been done on the 8 oil wells in Fiji where two are probably the ones that are feasible that we should look at.

He says one issue we have to look at is any interested investor who is willing to come and do the study and the other is that we have a commitment, not only in Fiji but worldwide, that we should move more towards renewable energy.

Immanuel stressed that we are trying to move towards renewable energy, and Energy Fiji Limited is going towards that path, with capital expenditure of around $2.3 billion in the next decade or so.
