The centre of Category 3 Tropical Cyclone Vaianu was analysed at 530 kilometres west northwest of Yasawa-i-Rara and 460 kilometres west of Nadi this evening.

TC Vaianu is moving southeast at about 8 kilometres per hour, and is expected to lie 320km west-southwest of Yasawa-i-Rara at 6pm tomorrow.

The Nadi Weather Office says the forecast to midnight tomorrow for the Fiji group: Over Land areas of the Northern Division, Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, Western half of Viti Levu[ from Sigatoka-Coral Coast through Nadi to Rakiraki, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands: Expect fresh to strong northeasterly winds with speeds of 30 to 45 kilometres per hour and gusts up to 70 kilometres per hour.

The winds will become northerly and increase to 60 kilometres per hour and gusts up to 90 kilometres per hour from tomorrow.

Localised heavy rain may lead to flash flooding of low lying and flood prone areas.

Isolated damages to houses made of old corrugated iron or timber or unsheilded structures in exposed communities and broken tree branches can be expected.

These indirect effects of Cyclone Vaianu will continue from now until Wednesday.
