A tragic incident over the weekend has left a community in mourning after a 4-year-old child lost her life when a school gate fell on her in Lautoka.

Save the Children Fiji CEO, Shairana Ali, is calling for a full and immediate investigation into how the incident occurred and is urging authorities to ensure accountability.

Ali says the heartbreaking event has sparked urgent calls for stronger safety standards in schools and child-centred environments.

The CEO has extended heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and all those affected by this devastating and preventable loss.

She says no child should ever lose their life in a place meant for learning and growth.

Ali further says that the incident highlights the urgent need to ensure safer environments for children, especially in schools, which must meet the highest safety standards.

Ali emphasises that child safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, urging parents, caregivers, school authorities, and community leaders to remain vigilant and proactive in identifying potential hazards.

She reaffirms the organisation’s commitment to supporting efforts that strengthen child protection measures across all sectors.

We have also sent questions to Police on whether anyone has been taken to task for this matter.
