Ministry looking to reduce internal exams for secondary schools

The Ministry of Education is looking at reducing the number of exams for secondary schools where they want to move away from having exams in the middle of the school terms.

While speaking at Namaka Public School in Nadi, Minister for Education Premila Kumar says they only want to keep the mid-year and annual exams.

Kumar says this is because it is a very short period of barely 12 or 13 weeks when students come to school in the first term and there is no point in testing their knowledge.

She says teachers can continue with their short tests but not as a major exam.

Kumar has also revealed that they will be scrapping exams for students from Years 1 to 3.

The Minister says she feels students have become too exam centric.

Kumar says they should not only produce doctors, nurses and teachers but should also be looking at producing plumbers, electricians, farmers and even entertainers.


She adds we need to see the talent in the children and encourage
