Prominent Suva lawyer and former President of the Fiji Law Society, Devanesh Sharma has called on the Fiji Law Society to get the hell out of politics and fulfill their responsibility by holding workshops on important issues like ethics.

While speaking during the Attorney General’s Conference in Natadola, Sharma says the Law Society under section 13(a) of the Legal Practitioners Act 2009 is obliged to maintain the standards of their profession.

Sharma further says the Law Society should take a deep interest and run courses for ethics, duties and conflicts and this should be done on a regular basis.

We have sent questions to President of the Fiji Law Society, Wylie Clarke.

He will comment later.

In it's most recent statement, the Fiji Law Society said it was seriously concerned about Sharvada Sharma’s dismissal as Solicitor General in breach of the clear requirements of the 2013 Constitution and the Judicial Services Commission’s explicit confirmation that a tribunal would be appointed to investigate the allegations of misbehaviour made against him.

Law Society President, Wylie Clarke had said the termination of Sharma’s appointment without due process being afforded to him is a grave assault on the rule of law and threatens the independence of critical constitutional offices.

Clarke said they are also concerned that the removal may be unlawful.
