This year's Constitution Day will always be memorable for 6 students who walked away with $500 each after being named winners of “Our Constitution Challenge”.

On the 8th anniversary of the Fijian Constitution, students were asked to look at one of the socio-economic rights which is the right to social protection schemes.

President, Jioji Konrote says for the video competition in the 5 to 12 years category, 9-year-old Loraine Nasaroa of St Teresa’s Primary School in Ba won the first prize.

In the category for students aged 13 to 18 years, Saakshi Goundar of Natabua High School and George Telawa of Tavua College were both announced winners.

There are three national winners in the essay competition.

In the 5 to 12 years old category, Hibah Siddiqa of Nadi Muslim Primary School won the first prize while Chreeshita Kumar of Xavier College won the 13 to 18 years category.

In her essay, Kumar says the right to social security schemes is a right given to every individual.

She says this right has helped people survive, to support themselves and their families.

Kumar adds her grandparents are living their life fully supported by the social welfare scheme and she is glad that our Constitution includes such a right that protects the fellow vulnerable citizens.

University of Fiji student, Avinal Chand won the 19 to 25 years category.

President Konrote says while they work hard to get the students back in the classrooms, it is good to see that students are using their time at home to share knowledge on Constitution Day.

He adds with our economy battered by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Government’s commitment to uphold the socioeconomic right has been tested by a time of serious need across Fiji.

The President says they are meeting those challenges with historic levels of support to the Fijian people.
