Ministry dismisses claims of changes to school operations, Term 3 to proceed as scheduled

Schools across Fiji will continue to operate as normal in Term 3, with the Ministry of Education confirming that there have been no changes to the 2026 academic calendar, student attendance requirements, teaching programmes or national examinations.

Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Education Navin Raj issued this clarification this evening following media reports and speculation regarding an internal administrative circular, assuring students, parents, teachers and other stakeholders that Term 3 will begin on September 7th, and conclude on December 4th as scheduled.

Raj says Year 8, Year 12 and Year 13 external examinations will proceed according to the approved assessment calendar, while all students are expected to attend classes physically throughout the term.

He says teaching and learning activities will continue uninterrupted, reflecting the Ministry's commitment to delivering quality education.

The Permanent Secretary also clarified that the completion of syllabus coverage during Term 2 is a long-standing practice, with Term 3 traditionally focused on trial examinations, revision classes, remedial programmes and preparation for external examinations.

He highlighted that since 2024, the Fiji Year 8 Examination has been conducted during Term 3, with results released in November to allow secondary schools to enrol Year 9 students based on official national examination results rather than internal assessment marks.

Raj also addressed concerns regarding the "Student Home Life" field in the Fiji Education Management Information System (FEMIS), saying it is a standard component of student records used to support planning, student welfare, policy development, resource allocation and targeted interventions.

He says schools have been reminded to ensure that all student information is accurately maintained and regularly updated within the FEMIS platform.

He further noted that Term 3 remains an important period for continuous assessments in Years 1 to 3, annual examinations for Years 4 to 7 and Years 9 to 11, as well as pastoral care programmes and activities aimed at supporting students' holistic development.

Year 10 students will also participate in career expos designed to help them make informed decisions about subject selections before entering Year 11.

He stresses that the circular referred to in recent reports is an internal administrative communication intended for Heads of Schools and relevant Ministry personnel and does not introduce any changes to educational programmes or normal school operations.
