The University of Fiji will be releasing today what is believed to be Fiji’s first jazz tribute song dedicated to Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna as part of this year’s Ratu Sukuna Day celebrations, according to Vice-Chancellor Professor Shaista Shameem.
Professor Shameem says the song was composed by Sailasa Tora, who is well known for his work with Black Rose, and is performed by Tora and music producer Simi Rova.
She says the song is being released through the university’s Vox Populi radio station and by fijivillage as part of the celebrations.

Professor Shameem says the university is also holding exhibitions across its Saweni, Samabula and Levuka campuses showcasing different stages of Ratu Sukuna’s life, including his childhood, war years in the French Foreign Legion and his role as a statesman.
She says a video programme on Ratu Sukuna’s life is also being played across the campuses for students and staff.
Professor Shameem says the university also joined activities at Ratu Sukuna Memorial School where students took part in art activities focused on Ratu Sukuna.
While speaking on the lessons from Ratu Sukuna’s life, Professor Shameem says his message was about diversity, peace and leadership by example.
She says Fiji’s leaders should reflect the values Ratu Sukuna stood for, and the University of Fiji is strongly committed to fostering and promoting peace across generations and among all communities in Fiji.
