Fijian families and businesses can rest assured that there will be no shortage of cement products, despite the temporary closure of Pacific Cement Pte Limited.
Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission CEO, Senikavika L. Jiuta, says consumers can be confident that their needs will be met and that the FCCC will not tolerate any unfair practices seeking to exploit the situation.
Jiuta says they understand the importance of cement for everyday Fijians.
She says FCCC has been closely monitoring the situation after Pacific Cement informed them on 21st March 2025 that its mill had suffered mechanical damage.
Repair works for the mill are currently underway and are expected to be completed by 27 May 2025.
Jiuta says, the FCCC immediately engaged with both cement suppliers — Pacific Cement and Tengy Cement — and conducted a comprehensive market study, which included a 15-month analysis of sales, production, and demand trends, as well as production capacity assessments.
She says the Commission concluded that there is a sufficient supply of cement in Fiji to meet local demand until Pacific Cement resumes full operations.
Jiuta adds that Tengy Cement has proactively ramped up its production at both its Suva and Lautoka mills, increasing from one shift to two shifts per day to bridge the supply gap.
The CEO reiterates that there is no need for concern regarding cement shortages and warns that any opportunistic practices, such as unjustified price increases, will be met with strict enforcement actions.
