Fiji’s transition to clean transport is getting a major boost, with an estimated US$80 million in annual exports expected from a new partnership with China to introduce new energy vehicles and green infrastructure in the country.

The China (Yunnan)–Fiji New Energy Vehicle Export Project, launched in Kunming, marks the start of a large-scale initiative to promote clean energy, technology exchange, and sustainable transport across Fiji and the South Pacific.

Renowned Chinese NEV brands including Wuling, Geely, SAIC, and Foton Times will officially enter the Fijian and Pacific markets through this deal.

Managing Director and CEO of FMF Group of Companies, Sanjay Punja says the partnership is more than a commercial agreement; it’s a shared vision for a smarter and greener Pacific.

He says FMF, alongside Chinese partners, will help accelerate the adoption of new energy vehicles in Fiji and the wider Pacific region.

Punja, Group General Manager Anuj Patel, and Yunnan Maimiao Automobile Service Co., Ltd signed multiple cooperation agreements covering the construction of photovoltaic, energy storage, and charging infrastructure, as well as the servicing of Chinese EV brands.

Executive Vice Governor of Yunnan Province, Zhao Junmin, says the initiative is part of China’s broader green development agenda and supports the Pacific’s energy transition.

The project directly supports Fiji’s Blue Pacific 2050 Strategy and carbon neutrality goals, setting a benchmark for regional cooperation on clean energy.
