The Fiji Corrections Service has clarified that there are 206 active cases of HIV recorded within Fiji’s correctional facilities.
The Corrections Service stressed this after there were misleading claims that there are 1,440 positive cases across the prison network.
They say this figure is entirely false.
The Corrections Service says it relies on an unverified 60 percent prevalence rate previously mentioned by former Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa.
They say this claim was immediately corrected by the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Health and Medical Services.
Records show 151 cases in 2024 and 173 cases in 2025.
They have recorded three deaths due to AIDS-related complications over the last four years, one death in 2023 and two deaths last year.
The data shows a disproportionate over-representation of females, with 17 active cases, however, a deeper analysis reveals that the vast majority of these female cases involve individuals currently in remand.
They says among the convicted female population, there are 5 positive cases out of a total convicted female muster of 60 inmates.
The Fiji Corrections Service is taking aggressive steps to manage and monitor the situation.
