Human Rights Commission calls for zero tolerance on torture after alleged inmate assault

The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission is calling for zero tolerance on torture and all forms of ill-treatment following a viral video showing the alleged assault of an inmate by a Fiji Corrections Service officer at the Lautoka Remand Centre.

The Commission welcomes the Fiji Corrections Service's decision to launch a formal investigation into the incident.

Director Loukinikini Lewaravu says the inmate should receive immediate medical attention, appropriate care and any necessary support while the investigation is underway.

Lewaravu says every person, including those in detention, has the right to be treated with dignity and humanity, and people deprived of their liberty remain entitled to the full protection of their human rights.

She says the investigation should be conducted promptly, independently, impartially and transparently.

Lewaravu says if the allegations are proven, those responsible must be held accountable in accordance with the law.

She adds the Commission will continue to monitor the matter and has reaffirmed the importance of upholding human rights in all places of detention.
