Attorney General and Minister for Tourism, Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum has criticized the International Bar Association’s stance on Fiji and has called for the IBA President, Fernando Pelapzpier to learn from the approach of Law Asia.
This is after Law Asia President, Donald Yap visited the country last week and held meetings with the AG, the Prime Minister and executives of the Fiji Law Society and was informed of the real situation of Fiji.
Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum said it is disappointing that the IBA yet again continued to assess Fiji in a blinkered and one dimensional way.
The President of IBA recently said in an international forum that the international Community should continue to put pressure on Fiji to return to democratic rule.
Khaiyum said such remarks are unfortunately paradoxical because on one hand while the president claims to be adhering to the basic principle of justice he has prejudged the matter without genuinely making an effort to hear from all parties in a transparent and unprejudiced manner.
