Six target areas are being formulated as part of a strategic plan by the Sugar Ministry to improve the sector’s performance.
Fiji Sugar Ministry director Viliame Gucake said the areas identified include, increase in the crop production, reduction in the harvesting and transportation costs, milling, marketing and revenue generation, the industry structure, and the improvement of the cane quality payment system.
He said the industry also had to do more work to improve mill efficiency and reliability.
Gucake proposed that mill efficiency can be improved by extracting more sugar from the cane and mill reliability to ensure no breakdowns during the crushing season.
Meanwhile, the Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and National Disaster Management Inia Seruiratu urged the National Committee on Better Utilization of Land to work closely with stakeholders to ensure that deliverables and objectives are met.
He reminded the committee to work closely with the land users, stakeholders and amongst each other for the betterment of Fiji’s economy.
