LTA proposal to govt includes no bus fare for elderly, disabled

No bus fares for the elderly during a certain time period and road levy to be paid on fuel usage are just some of the proposals that have been put forward by the Land Transport Authority during Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama's official visit to their headquarters in Vale-levu yesterday.

LTA CEO Etuate Koroi said they've proposed that there be no bus fare for the elderly and the disabled during 9am to 2.30pm and half fares outside this time period.

Koroi said on road levy they've proposed that the road levy should be paid on fuel usage which is indirect payment not felt by vehicle owners.

This will be based on a user pay concept, as opposed to the current system where people apply for exemptions which results in a revenue reduction for government.

Koroi also proposed to government for LTA to collect all outstanding court fines which now stand at over $28 million dollars.

He told Bainimarama yesterday that the LTA has the manpower to collect these fines without any problems, because those who are defaulting will have to come to LTA to renew their driver’s license or wheel tax.

These proposals are likely to be tabled in cabinet by the Transport Minister.
