Corrections officers suspended with half pay over Lautoka Remand Centre incident

The four Fiji Corrections Service officers involved in an incident where an officer was seen in a social media video dragging an inmate into a dormitory before kicking and punching him several times, have been suspended with half pay.

Fiji Corrections Public Relations Officer Jone Sigavou says the suspension was necessary to allow a thorough investigation to take place and ensure the process can proceed without interference.

Sigavou says the officers were suspended yesterday following the incident at the Lautoka Remand Centre, which was captured on CCTV footage and later widely circulated on social media.

He says the duration of the suspension will depend on the outcome and completion of the investigations.

The Fiji Corrections Service says it maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of violence.

It says assaults by an officer against an inmate, or an inmate against an officer, are strictly prohibited.
