Ratu Tevita calls for a self-reliant Lau with less dependence on Government funding
Lau should become more self-reliant by creating its own economic opportunities instead of relying heavily on government funding for development.

This was the message from the Tui Nayau, Sau ni Vanua o Lau and Tui Lau, Ratu Tevita Uluilakeba Mara, while addressing delegates at the Lau Provincial Council meeting at the Yatu Lau Hotel in Suva this morning.

Ratu Tevita says the province has the resources and potential to stand on its own through business development and investment that will benefit the people of Lau.

He says the Council should carefully consider the advice given by President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu during the opening of the meeting, particularly the need to protect Lau's culture while also focusing on the development of its qoliqoli and creating more business opportunities for the province.

Ratu Tevita says there is a need to establish a dedicated committee to lead initiatives relating to the sustainable development of Lau's qoliqoli and identify opportunities that will create long-term economic growth for the people.

The Provincial Council endorsed the proposal and appointed a committee comprising of Aisake Taito, Alipate Naiorosui, Jaoji Koroi, Viliame Leqa, Solomone Nata, Filimoni Waqabaca, Sakiusa Raivoce and Nacanieli Yalimaiwai.

Lau Provincial Council Chair Akapusi Tuifafalele also confirmed that Ratu Meli Saubulinayau has been released from the committee following his appointment to a new role with the Veitarogi Vanua Office under iTaukei Affairs.
