"The main reason for setting price control on certain basic food items is to ensure that a person living in the village can afford to buy the items."
These are the comments of Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama while addressing the members of the Lomaiviti Provincial Council yesterday.
He said it is not bad for businesses to make profits, however he said they should understand that the prices they charge should coincide with what an individual earns, be it someone who is earning an income fortnightly or a farmer in the village.
Commodore Bainimarama stressed that it is also Government's aim to reduce the price of hardware items, as the high cost was a hindrance to people in trying to improve their living standards and is also a major constraint to foreigners in trying to set up their business in Fiji.
He concluded that apart from the assistance that is been given by Government, the people of Lomaiviti should also try to help themselves first, rather than always waiting for assistance to reach their door-steps.
The Lomaiviti Provincial council meeting will end today.
