The Republic of Fiji Military Forces confirms that a total of 246 live rounds of 5.56mm ammunition were voluntarily handed over to the RFMF in the Nausori area on the 16th of May.
RFMF Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai says the discovery and surrender of the live rounds came about as a direct result of the ongoing joint security operations currently being conducted by the RFMF and the Fiji Police Force.
He says along with the ammunition, several magazines and magazine pouches were also surrendered and are now safely in RFMF custody for further assessment and investigation.
Major General Kalouniwai says the RFMF acknowledges and commends the responsible action taken by those involved in voluntarily coming forward.
He says such cooperation greatly contributes to maintaining national security, public safety, and community confidence.
The RFMF is strongly urging members of the public who may have any information regarding the possession, storage, movement, or concealment of illegal arms, ammunition, military equipment, or related items to immediately come forward and report such information to the nearest security authorities.
The Commander says the unauthorized possession of arms and ammunition poses a serious threat to national security and public safety.
Major General Kalouniwai says the RFMF assures the public that all information received will be treated with the utmost confidentiality and handled appropriately through the relevant security and law enforcement processes.
He says the RFMF, together with the Fiji Police Force and other security stakeholders, remains committed to ensuring the safety, security, and stability of Fiji and will continue to take all necessary measures to safeguard the nation and its people.
