True patriotism is not simply about celebrating our national flag or expressing pride in our country on Fiji Day. It is about demonstrating through our words and actions that we genuinely care for Fiji and its people.
It means putting the interests of our nation above personal and political differences, respecting one another and making meaningful contributions to the progress and development of our country.
That is the Fiji Day message from Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu as Fiji celebrates the 56th anniversary of its independence.

While wishing every Fijian a Happy Fiji Day, Seruiratu says the occasion is a time to reflect on the nation's journey as an independent country, honour the sacrifices and contributions of those who came before us, and renew our collective commitment to building a stronger, more united and prosperous Fiji for generations to come.
He says nation-building is not the responsibility of Government alone, but a shared responsibility that rests on every Fijian, regardless of ethnicity, religion, political beliefs or social standing.
Seruiratu says everyone has a role to play in shaping the future of the country, whether through the work they do, the communities they serve or the values they pass on to their children.
He adds that as a multiracial and multicultural nation, Fijians must continue to embrace their diversity while recognising that they are united by something greater than their differences - their shared identity as Fijians and their common love for the country.

The Opposition Leader says people may hold different views and opinions, but these differences should never prevent them from respecting one another, working together and pursuing the common good of the nation.
Seruiratu says leaders and citizens must remember that the Fiji they build today will be the Fiji their children inherit tomorrow.
He says Fijians owe it to future generations to create a nation where unity prevails over division, opportunities are available to all, and everyone can live with dignity, security and hope for a better future.
He is encouraging every Fijian to renew their sense of patriotism and national pride, move forward with a common purpose, support one another in times of difficulty and work collectively towards building a bigger, better and stronger Fiji.
Seruiratu adds that the nation's greatest achievements will not be measured simply by individual progress, but by what Fijians can accomplish together as one people.
