The Water Authority of Fiji is working with other stakeholders to facilitate the evacuation of 4 households living along Cunningham Creek to place them in available government housing agencies.

The Authority will be upgrading the current wastewater pipeline along the 4 miles bridge at Centrepoint which is the Maravu Settlement across Cunningham Creek.

Water Authority is working with the Ministry of Environment, Director Housing as well as the Public Rental Board to facilitate the relocation.

It says the wastewater pipeline carries all untreated wastewater from the greater Suva area to the Kinoya Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The Authority says there are some informal settlements situated within this Wastewater Reserve.

It says officers have distributed the Authority’s normal public notices of information to the households regarding the proposed project.

It says the Authority has not given the notice to vacate the homes.

The Authority says it is aware that the machinery being used during the upgrade project will pose a risk to this settlement, especially to those households in the immediate vicinity of the proposed works.

It says after construction, the households will have secured a home in one of the government housing Agencies.

The Authority strongly recommends that such people do not return to the Wastewater Reserve as it is reserved for sewer line maintenance and upgrade works and there are environmental and health risks associated with living in close proximity to the sewage system.
