Taveuni senior rugby captain Samuela Kamikamica says the team's rise has been matched by growing support from the people of Taveuni, giving the players extra motivation as they prepare for their first Skipper Cup match this weekend.

Speaking to fijivillage sports, Kamikamica says when he first captained the side two years ago, only a handful of supporters would visit the team during training camps and before matches.

He says as the team continued to improve on the field, more people began believing in them and rallying behind their journey.

Kamikamica says that support has continued to grow, with villagers, Taveuni people living in Suva, other parts of Fiji and overseas all backing the team as they prepare for the Skipper Cup.

Kamikamica says travelling to competitions in Suva has never been easy, with the team relying on fundraising, kava barrel and donations from villages to cover the cost of travelling from the island.

He says the generosity of the community has helped keep the team's Skipper Cup dream alive and motivated the players to keep pushing through the challenges.

Kamikamica says the team is taking one game at a time, starting with Malolo this weekend, and is determined to give its best in every match.

He says faith has also played a big part in the team's preparation, with players praying together and trusting God to guide them through every challenge.

Kamikamica also thanked Northern Rally and Combat Sportswear for supporting the team with jerseys and training gear for this year's competition.

He also thanked his parents, siblings, wife and young child for standing by him as he prepares to lead Taveuni for a second straight season.

Kamikamica says his message to young people is to always give their best, be honest and never give up, even when it feels like nobody notices their efforts.

He says God sees every sacrifice and every struggle, and believes hard work will eventually be rewarded.
