Matanimeke of QVS and Nenewa of Thomas Baker claim glory in 3000m

Matanimeke of QVS and Nenewa of Thomas Baker claim glory in 3000m

Rosivela Matanimeke extended Queen Victoria School's lead in the Coca Cola Games medal tally, winning his second gold in the Boys Open 3,000 metres this morning.

Matanimeke ran a time of 9 minutes and 43.18 seconds.

Former Marist Brothers High School athlete Isireli Naikelekelevesi's record of 9 minutes and 6.20 seconds set in 1995, still stands.

Matanimeke was challenged throughout the race by Nakasi High School's Head boy Savenaca Valesu, who settled for silver.

Matanimeke says it was not an easy race, considering the strong athletes competing this year, but his target was to win gold.

The 19-year-old says the 4.30am training sessions have paid off today.

He dedicated his win to his parents, especially his grandmother, who is here to support him.

He also dedicated the victory to his entire school and the old boys.

Ravishek Kumar of Nukuloa College in Ba won bronze.

Meanwhile, Lusiana Nenewa of Thomas Baker Memorial School in Namosi also won her second gold medal after taking out the Girls Open 3,000 metres this morning.

She ran a time of 13 minutes 15.49 seconds.

Nenewa dedicates her win to her parents, who have been supportive in her training, the teachers and students of Thomas Baker.

She says preparations for the Coke Games have gone well.

She adds that she was determined to win as she finished third in last year's race.

The record of 10 minutes 43.80 seconds, set by Mereseini Naidau of Nadarivatu Secondary School in 2011, still stands.

She won her first gold medal in the Intermediate Girls 1,500 metres on Thursday.

Merekeleni Ratubaka of MGM High claimed silver, while Livanalagi Gaunavou of Ratu Latianara College won bronze.
