Suva Grammar to battle Marist in U18 final of Southern Zone Schools Rugby

The final of the anticipated U18 Vodafone Southern Zone Secondary Schools Rugby competition has been confirmed, with Suva Grammar School set to take on rivals Marist Brothers High School next weekend.

Both teams had to dig deep to secure victories in their respective semi-finals this afternoon.

Grammar fought tooth and nail to edge Nasinu Secondary School 18-16, while Marist overcame an unpredictable Nabua Secondary School side 26-15.

Meanwhile, in the U14 grade, Grammar will take on Dudley in the final after Grammar thumped Nasinu Secondary School 27-5 and Dudley upsetting Marist 17-10.

In the under 15, Grammar will play MGM High School in the final after Grammar edged Marist 11-5, and MGM beating Nasinu 10-6.

In the under 16, Grammar defeated Gospel 15-10 to set up a final showdown against Marist, which ended Nasinu’s unbeaten run 24-21 in the second semi final.

In the under 17, Grammar and Nasinu played to a 35-all draw but Grammar was awarded the win after they scored more converted tries, and they will take on Marist in the final after the boys from Flagstaff defeated Ratu Sukuna Memorial School 20-12.

In the under 19, Nasinu defeated Naitasiri Secondary School 18-13 while Ratu Simione Matanitobua College beat Assemblies of God High School 17-7 in the second semi final.

In the Weet-Bix Raluve competition, Lomaivuna High School defeated Grammar 20-10 in the first semi final of the U16 grade to book a final showdown with Ratu Latianara College, which defeated Nasinu 10-7 in the second semi final.

In the U18 grade, Nasinu defeated Naitasiri 10-5 in the first semi final and MGM edged Lomary Secondary School 18-17 in the second semi final.


Grammar overcomes spirited Gospel side to claim 15-10 win and book place in U16 final

Suva Grammar School Under-16 overcame a spirited Gospel High School side to secure a 15-10 win in the first semi-final of the Vodafone Southern Zone Secondary Schools Rugby competition, booking a final showdown with rivals Marist Brothers High School next week.

Grammar took a comfortable 8-0 lead at halftime after scoring an unconverted try and a penalty kick.

Gospel came back strongly in the second half with two unconverted tries, while Grammar added a converted try and held on until the final whistle to seal the win.

In the second semi-final, Marist ended Nasinu Secondary School’s unbeaten run in the zone competition with a 24-21 victory.

Marist had led 17-9 at halftime.

In other semi finals played so far today, in the U14 grade, Grammar thumped Nasinu Secondary School 27-5 and Dudley upset Marist 17-10.

In the under 15 semi finals, Grammar edged Marist 11-5, in the under 17, Grammar and Nasinu played to a 35-all draw but Grammar was awarded the win after they scored more converted tries.

In the under 18, MGM High School edged Lomary Secondary School 18-17, and in the under 19, Nasinu Secondary School defeated Naitasiri Secondary School 18-13.
