Legendary Brazilian striker Pele claims Cristiano Ronaldo is better than Lionel Messi but has quipped he is still the best footballer of all time.

Pele, a three-time World Cup winner between 1958 and 1970, was jointly awarded Fifa's Player of the 20th Century with Argentina's 1980s midfield maestro Diego Maradona.

The 79-year-old Brazilian told the Youtube channel Philado that "today the best player in the world is Cristiano Ronaldo.

He says he thinks Ronaldo is the best because he's more consistent, but you can't forget about [Lionel] Messi, of course, but he's not a striker.

Pele scored 1281 goals in 1363 games across his career.

Cristiano Ronaldo so far has 725 goals and 220 assists in 1000 matches, including 99 in 164 internationals for Portugal.

Messi - who, as indicated by Pele is an attacking midfielder, not a striker - has netted 697 times in 856 games and produced 259 assists. He has 70 goals in 138 appearances for Argentina.
