They are the two best trainers in the world but neither Aidan O’Brien nor Kiwi expat Chris Waller will be at Flemington today as Anthony Van Dyck, Tiger Moth, Verry Elleegant and Finche try to win one of them a first Melbourne Cup.

Covid-19 restrictions have the great trainers relying on their staff and processes to take the race that stops the nation, but reports coming out of Melbourne continue to please them.

Waller will be in Sydney and O'Brien in Ireland, but the similarities and intensity of both men is extraordinary.

It has taken them to the top of tree in Europe and Australia, but the Melbourne Cup still eludes them.

The winning horse will get AUD $4.4 million in prize money.

The Melbourne Cup Race will start at around 4pm today.
