Defending champions Manchester City have been eliminated from the FIFA Club World Cup at the last-16 stage after suffering a dramatic 4-3 extra-time defeat to Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal.

Manchester City started strongly, with captain Bernardo Silva scoring within the first 10 minutes of the match, giving them a 1-0 lead at half-time.

Al-Hilal found their footing in the second half, equalising within a minute of the restart through Marcos Leonardo, before former Barcelona winger Malcom gave them a 2-1 lead in the 52nd minute.

However, City's Erling Haaland responded swiftly, levelling the score just three minutes later, making it 2-2 and sending the match into extra time.

Kalidou Koulibaly’s powerful header in the 94th minute appeared to seal the win for Al-Hilal, but substitute Phil Foden kept City in the contest.

Marcos Leonardo then netted his second goal of the night to secure a historic victory.

Al-Hilal will be up against Brazilian side Fluminense at 7am Saturday, while fellow Brazilian club Palmeiras will take on Chelsea at 1pm Saturday in the quarter finals.
