Fiji has the potential to become world champions in the sport of touch rugby and the upcoming Fijian Cup looks to promote and build the sport in Fiji.

Director of Tourism HQ Richard Henry says wherever you look in Fiji, there are potential world champs everywhere.

He says if you know Fiji, there's just this one-touch rugby played wherever you go and wanted to find out why Fiji wasn't at the top of the table with this sport.

He adds as it turned out, Federation International Touch was really keen on helping build the sport in Fiji but just didn't really know how to go about it.

Henry says that got them thinking about investing $50k in prizes for a tournament and then flying in New Zealand and Australian leadership to help build the sport.

He says instead of spending money on staging and lighting, they should start putting that money towards sporting infrastructure in Fiji.

Henry says the biggest thing that they have learnt over the last seven years is just how much love there is over in Australia and New Zealand and how keen people are to come in and support Fiji but they are just trying to figure out how.

Henry says there will be over a thousand competitors flying in for the Fijian Cup this year.

He says Touch Rugby is now in its fifth year and had over 150 teams including international teams, applying for just 24 spots.

He adds that for Tag Rugby, teams are flying in for the inaugural year, with nines having men's and open women's and next year, they are looking to bring in under 23 women's, which is a superb pathway to the NRLW and the legends division to bring those that have kind of moved on from the clubs back into the ranks.

Henry says for sevens, it is their first year in the tournament with categories like under 85s, the legends division, open women's and open men's.

The Fijian Cup will be held at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka from the 14th of next month to the 1st of December.

Tickets are five dollars for adults and free for kids.
