The spirit of Fiji Day was brought to life through high-energy rallies and cross-cultural camaraderie at the Chinese Ambassador’s Cup Championship - Fiji Day Badminton Tournament, held at the Yat Sen School Hall.

The tournament marked a significant celebration not only of Fiji’s 55th Independence anniversary but also the 50th Anniversary of China–Fiji Diplomatic Relations and 170 Years of Chinese Settlement in Fiji.

17-year-old Leilah Chung representing RedSea Dragons Badminton Club, was among the standout voices of the event.

Speaking to fijivillage Sports, Chung expressed pride in participating for the first time on Fiji Day and highlighted the tournament's inclusive nature.

She says the championship brought together players from diverse backgrounds including iTaukei, Chinese, and Indo-Fijian communities, a reflection of Fiji’s multicultural identity.

She says for the first time in the nation’s badminton history, a Masters Group was introduced, providing men over the age of 40 with a platform to showcase their talents.

Chung also encouraged spectators and newcomers to try the sport for themselves.

On day one of the competition, in the Men’s A Grade Finals, Robert and Lee are set to take on Ali and Steven in a much-anticipated matchup, while the Men’s B Grade will feature a showdown between Harry & Yi Fei and Joseph & Nathan.

The Men’s C Grade has reached the semi-final stage, showcasing the next generation of junior talent at this hour, while Wu Fan and Lai Qing have already secured their spot in the Men’s D Grade finals, awaiting their opponents.

On the women’s side, Leilah Chung and her cousin Maliti Chung claimed victory in the Women’s A Grade, with Carmen Loo & Michelle Qiu as runners-up and Lily & Ying Ying placing third.

Lily and Ying Ying have also advanced to the Women’s B Grade finals, poised for another strong finish. The Masters (40+ category) matches are still underway, with several intense matches left before crowning this year’s champions.
