Fijian star Timoci Tavatavanawai has committed another two years to the Highlanders in a major boost for the struggling Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific side.
The powerhouse midfielder announced this after cleaning up at the Highlanders’ end-of-season awards in Dunedin.
He has signed through to the end of the 2027 season, which will keep Tavatavanawai in the frame for the All Blacks’ World Cup squad.
Tavatavanawai has been a shining light for the Highlanders in an otherwise disappointing season after being moved from the wing to second five-eighth.
Dutch-born All Blacks-eligible lock Fabian Holland has also committed his future to the Highlanders, signing a three-year deal through to 2028.
Highlanders coach Jamie Joseph said he was thrilled to retain two of his best performers, having recently revealed the challenges the team faces when it comes to recruitment.
The Highlanders are rooted at the bottom of the table after losing nine of their past 10 games.
They need at least a point from their final game against the in-form Chiefs to avoid the wooden spoon.
The Highlanders will meet the Chiefs at 7.05pm this Friday.
In other matches, the Brumbies will meet the Crusaders at 9.35pm Friday, the Blues will face the Waratahs at 4.35pm Saturday, the Hurricanes will take on the Moana Pasifika at 7.05pm, and the Reds will host the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua at 9.35pm Saturday.
