39-year-old Waisale Beci, a former Fiji 7s winger, has died after suffering from a short illness.
Beci was part of the Fiji 7s setup during the 2009–2010 period and emerged as one of the exciting wingers in the national side.
He made his mark during the World Rugby Sevens Series, including Fiji’s successful campaign in Wellington in 2010 under coach Iliesa Tanivula.
World Rugby later described him as a new Fijian star in the sevens game.
He was also named in Fiji’s squad for the 2008–09 season and was involved with the national setup during a period when Fiji remained one of the leading teams in international sevens rugby.
In 2010, Beci scored two tries for Fiji in their opening pool match at the Hong Kong Sevens, as Fiji defeated Thailand 82–7.
His rugby career later continued through involvement in developing young players.
News of Beci’s passing has brought back memories of his contribution to Fiji rugby and his time as part of the national 7s setup.
